Do remember that this tool, like the Google trends is in beta and can be buggy, so take the data with a pinch of salt. So, how do you use Google Insights?

Step 1: Start I am out looking for a new niche to enter. I visit Google Insights.

Step 2: So, what is on my mind today? I know for a fact that people are spending a lot on their passtimes and recreations. Me for instance, spend quite a bit on fuel when I am out riding my motorbike. But wait, recession? What recession? Lets see what recreations are hot. I normally target the audience in the United States because that is where advertisers are. That is where people are buying online. Hence the right recipe for a internet marketer.

And you get the following result

Step 3: Pick up niche. So you get a list of recreations hot in the United States in the last 12 months. Seems like the recreation industry was down the whole year and has only started to pick up. Hmm, end of recession? So, fishing seems to be a interesting place to be in. Using the Google News for a quick search reveals that fishing season is about to begin with the summer coming. Good place to be!

Step 4: Drilling down. I always loved the Keyword Sniper method by Courtney Tuttle. Too bad most of his resources are no longer available online. I always target micro niches than the whole niche in general. For example, “SEO in Cochin” is better than “SEO”. Using the Insights on our new keyword “fishing” I get the following keywords:

Step 5: Start working! Now I can either create a whole site based on the above keywords further using my keyword tools or find a few products on Amazon and promote it on adwords to make some sales.

But yes, I am yet to do keyword competition research on this list. I am yet to see if there are any advertisers for these keywords, I am yet to see a lot of things which goes into the making of a successful niche site. In Affiliate Marketing, it is easy to get excited to see conversions going up and money coming into your affiliate marketing account. But once you get serious about affiliate marketing, it can get pretty deceptive on your actual profits.

I used go insanely happy whenever I saw a conversion of $0.90 on email submits on my account, not any more. There is so much more involved to a successful affiliate marketer than conversions and money made. Money spent is a important factor too.

For me, money spent used to be on sales page designing, sales copywriting and then mainly in adwords. Is that it? No! I always to forget server expenses, domain name costs, softwares I buy for promoting sites and not to forget the bad habit of buying up half baked scripts from forums.

Over a period of time these expenses add up and boy! They EAT up into your profit margin. But with the help of the best accountant in town (who happens to be my dad too), I was able to get myself a small affiliate marketing excel sheet where my expenses for a site and income it generates are setup so that I know what eats up my margins and how I can reduce it.

It was surprising! Its been quietly making this money and I had not even had the mind to optimize it! Guess what? Its not about how much traffic you got, or how much subscribers you got in your niche market that matters. How many of them are sitting with a credit card in their hands, ready to buy what you offer them? Thats where your success as a affiliate marketer is. No one can teach you affiliate marketing, except testing and tweaking I will update you guys on how this site optimization goes in a month or two. It looks like it has the potential of $50 a day.

P.S: Even if you have a blog, check its stats and integrate adsense with your analytics account. Find out the converting pages, study the ad placement and work on creating more content on that topic or gaining more traffic from that source.

Why Massive Scaled up Niche Websites? What is the Strategy, boss?

I currently have..err..so many of them that I dnt even remember how many, I get this question like everyday. Every other person I meet usually decides to start with one massive site with everything from Apples to Zebras, and I quitely smile to myself and try to explain that its not just right to do so.

I was there once. I had a site on paper which tried to do everything. The main reasons being that I did not have the cash to buy new domains or the resources to host so many of them. But time proved me wrong and then I began to diversify. Here are the reasons why I moved from a single site for all niches to single site per laser target niche.

1. Audience – Its difficult to get an audience without focus. Someone might like your recipes category, but not your financial advice section.
2. Conversion – When you laser target your niche with the Keyword Sniping concept by Court or other strategies, it converts at amazing percentile.
3. Search Engine Advantage – While big sites like Wikipedia, yahoo answers or content based sites like sify or others have managed to get the top rankings for their umpteen niches, but they came from content contributed by masses, so if you are alone, laser focus your readers.
4. Monetizing – Different niches need different niche strategies. Trust me, an ad placement for a female audience niche is never same as that of a male dominated search topic. (Hint: Handbags and used jet skis).

And the fifth and my own personal favorite – You never do it one at a time, all your eggs in one basket? No way!

Making money with Affiliate Programs is easy and returns are way better than adsense. Adsense pays you per click where as affiliate marketing is all about CPA (Cost Per Action), which means you get paid when a visit clicks to the advertiser page and completes an action. The action be buying something, filling up a form or signing up to a service.

There are a lot of companies that are into affiliate marketing and a few which are worth signing up from my personal experience are

• NeverBlueAds
• Marketleverage
• Pepperjam Network
• Amazon

I have not been accepted into many top affiliate programs because its hard for Indians to get into one of these networks. Also, its best to stick with one or two networks that work best so that you do not get confused. I am not sure if Adsense can be replaced with money from Affiliate sales/conversions as it really depends on testing them. If you have a site which performs well with adsense, looking at the ads that run on them should give you an idea why people click on them. If it is a product based site, amazon products might bring in some extra bucks your way.

You can also make money with affiliate programs of popular services, like if you refer friends to survery sites or sites like that. if you do not mind spamming friends I will try to cover some of the ways I make money with affiliate marketing soon.

Since then, things changed and with joining in MarketLeverage, things have been looking good indeed! We joined then about 3 months back and money made with them is pretty good. 1. No one wants to help you out: Giving up on adsense niches is pretty easy, but ask any affliate marketer, he will not give up on his niche affliate market. The competition is almost saturated in every market out there that no one wants theirs friend in! So, you are on your own learning about affliate marketing unless you have a very helpful friend

2. Adwords can burn you bad: Once you start creating landing pages and bringing in traffic,  keep a tab on your affiliate earnings and expenses so that you do not get burned up. And don’t forget to use the geo-target on offers.

3. Patience and a lot of money: Since no one is really interested in helping you out with affiliate marketing, you are sure to loose a lot of money on it initially. But it will teach you a lot too. So, you are warned

This is what I can tell every newbie out there. Affiliate is a very interesting venue to make money and unlike adsense, its payout for your effort will be very high.
