You should have seen this Google adsense heatmap by Google, which according to them should give you the right clicks on your site. But not every site has the same placements and the same audience, so testing and tweaking are the only ways you can increase your adsense revenue.

The Less Is More concept

I don’t know if this concept goes by any other names online, but this is one thing which has helped some of my sites increase their revenues by almost 100%. In my younger days online, I usually slap up as many ad units as Google allows on a page and wait for clicks to drop in. But time has proven that sometimes having a single ad unit will yield you more money than having 3 ad blocks.

I used the most popular ad unit, the 300×250 ad block as a single ad on a page removing all other ads and my revenue shot up by more than 100%! My theory (feel free to disagree) is that by having less adspots, you are telling Google that you are giving them the best spot and therefore be served the most contextual ads for that spot. Another reason could be that it increases the overall usability of your site by increasing time spent on your site, which in Google terms is a “good website”.

Most of the sites have this ad unit blended into the content on the right or left. I was testing a placement where it stands out on top under the title a few weeks back and it was yielding better results than having content blended into the ads.

It is always good to at least review your placements every 6 months ifyou have been getting 10 cents clicks or no clicks at all. Also Google recently released font customization on ad units, have you checked it out? What were your results?

I remember overhearing in deep sleep in some audiobook  – “Any that requires you to work from morning to evening is not a business, but it is a job.” I am a great fan of this phrase. It is common sense yet when you think about it, it is dangerously powerful.

I am not exactly suggesting that you outsource all your work and sit back home munching chips and drowning cola, but if you have a part of business which is  essential to the business, but not worth your effort, OUTSOURCE. Why Massive Scaled up Niche Websites? What is the Strategy, boss?

I currently have..err..so many of them that I dnt even remember how many, I get this question like everyday. Every other person I meet usually decides to start with one massive site with everything from Apples to Zebras, and I quitely smile to myself and try to explain that its not just right to do so.

I was there once. I had a site on paper which tried to do everything. The main reasons being that I did not have the cash to buy new domains or the resources to host so many of them. But time proved me wrong and then I began to diversify. Here are the reasons why I moved from a single site for all niches to single site per laser target niche.

1. Audience – Its difficult to get an audience without focus. Someone might like your recipes category, but not your financial advice section.
2. Conversion – When you laser target your niche with the Keyword Sniping concept by Court or other strategies, it converts at amazing percentile.
3. Search Engine Advantage – While big sites like Wikipedia, yahoo answers or content based sites like sify or others have managed to get the top rankings for their umpteen niches, but they came from content contributed by masses, so if you are alone, laser focus your readers.
4. Monetizing – Different niches need different niche strategies. Trust me, an ad placement for a female audience niche is never same as that of a male dominated search topic. (Hint: Handbags and used jet skis).

And the fifth and my own personal favorite – You never do it one at a time, all your eggs in one basket? No way!

• Needs time. An adsense site I make today starts to bring in decent money only after 6 months.
• Depends on google, depends on your affiliate network, depends on the niche and a lot of other things.
• Depends.

All the ways in which I make money online today are those that are long term. Creating email subscribers, putting up a niche blog, participating in forums and blog comments under various niche sites are all part of a bigger plan. Not everyone has the time or the investment needed. If you are interested in that, check make money from a blog.

I started online from the basics. Doing dirty jobs like content creation, filling up forms and all that. Coming to think of it, if I had taken that up seriously, I would be making serious money today. But then, I will have to work!

I am as lazy as lazy can be. Ask me to sleep all day, I will.

If you are looking for ways to make a quick buck online and willing to work. Here are a few ideas I can suggest:

• Create content: Content is the base for all websites online. Articles, forum posts, press releases, sales page content, blog posts, reviews and everything else is content. If you have a basic control over your content, this is the best way to get started. Though competitive, this is what I did when I started off online to buy my own domain, my hosting and the basics. The rates are usually 1$ per 100 words. I have seen people do article packs based on a niche topic too. Anyone can manage 3-5 articles a day of 350 words each, making minimum of 10$ a day.  Also, have a few of those sample content on a blogspot blog for prospective clients.
• Can you create graphics? : Quick logos, editing pictures, creating header graphics and advertising banners is a skill a lot of people are looking for. Photoshop/Corel Draw and a bit of creativity. (someone defined creativity as a measure of how good you can hide your sources). Take a hint and get started! My logo here at TheAnand is a 5$ one
• Can you edit videos? Did you make your high school “trip down the memory lane” video? You stand a chance to edit videos and have your content seen by millions (youtube). There are a lot of video marketers looking for you out there.
• Data Entry: Though there are a lot of fruads in the data entry business online for individuals to start with, there are a lot of things you can do to get that first dollar online. Submission or social bookmarking sites, directories, creating gmail accounts (yea, you get paid by people for that) and loads of other stuff.
• Can you do anything online? Believe it or not, my first dollar online was made by approving websites in a web directory.

There you have it. Ways to get started tonight and make money online. As simple as they can get. I used this and will do it again soon if my guys are free again. This is quick money, all you need is a paypal account. No waiting for cheques, no waiting for traffic/clicks, no fear that your affiliate is stealing your leads. Dead simple money online.

How to Make Money Online Right NOW

I get a lot of questions about making money with adsense and online in general and SEO and stuff. So, I thought I would take a clue and build a site with you guys and show you first hand on how it is done.

The Goal:

To build a niche adsense site making about $30-$60 in 3 months with minimal effort. My competition is with Nomar of MonetizePRO, who is also my long time online friend and my first freelance employer.

He challenged me that he can do better than me at adsense and we decided that we hold a challenge to create a site in a common niche and after 3 months, that is in the month of January, whoever makes more money with adsense, wins.

The Plan:

I want to do this purely low mantainance so that I am involving my team of writers into this. I am thinking of about putting up about 15-20 articles a month till january and maybe 5 a month later on depending on the statistics.

I got my account activated on the 3rd of November 2005. And that was my first years income on adsense! But unlike most others, I did not quit Currently making a decent money on adsense, I guess I can talk about a few reasons why you do not make anything out of your adsense sites.

1. Keywords – No, I am not talking SEO here, but for adsense to make money, you will want to have those keywords in your article which has some number of advertisers. And usage of keywords for SEO is already proved by the gurus out there. More Traffic –> More Clicks —> More Money!!!

2. Niche – Niche is something my blog does not have, so take a clue. I, after blogging for about 2 years now am yet to decide which category this blog belongs to. Its about me, blogging, wordpress, seo, money online and even technology or php or anything else! I still get confused which category to submit my site to when I apply for networks! Niche your site well and gain targetted traffic making more clicks on your ads.

3. Dead Site – Without regular updation, your site is dead. More pages indexed, more ways for the traffic to trickle in. No brainer, really.

4. Attention Deficiency – If you are anything like what I was, you are creating sites and then forgetting them, running behind more niches than you can actually handle. Treating each site like a business in itself can go a long way in making successful residual adsense income.

5. Time & Research – Research your keywords and you will understand why your 2 post blog on credit cards is making nothing! It usually take anywhere between 3-5 months when a site begins to show some decent traffic and money on adsense. And almost a year to reach its full potential if you have a proper link building and SEO blueprint up.

Finally, I setup the adsense and it is now live and running on my feeds. These ads however will not be shown in feeds for emails or in blog aggregators. A very few do save a lot of money only to spend it in an emergency. So a lot of people, particularly youngsters want to make money online and be their own boss. Here are a few tips I think will help in molding a perfect you.

1. Know your target audience

Online or offline, its easy to create a product but not knowing your target audience can be a disaster. Before you start a site or a service, research so that you do not have to repent. TIME is money and you don’t have a way to compensate it.

2. Have a damn monetization plan!

At least a vague one initially. adsense, affiliates, offline money making, indirect monetization or anything. It helps a lot in the later days. Before you jump into a project, ask yourself, how do I make money off this? Or ask yourself, how do I benefit from this? It does not have to be money always, you benefit from getting to know more people, new contacts, or be able to push your other services, or just have a brand built up for you. Otherwise you end up having a really popular site and a target traffic who will not want to buy anything from you or even click on your ads.

3. Failure is not an option

I do not want to repeat the Abraham Lincoln history here, but when you fail at something, learn you lesson and move on. The one who repeats his mistakes deserves to be ran over by a herd of bulls!

4. You can do it!

Seriously you can. Repeat it when you wake up and when you get to bed, you will be able to do just about anything. Our sub-conscious mind is very powerful, but its your thought that makes or breaks it. Tell yourself that “you suck” and you eventually you will.

5. The Wheel can be reinvented

No matter how many people tell you that an idea is doomed to fail as its already there, it still can succeed. Digg clones, YouTube clones and heck, even start a new educational institution!

6. Sh*t or GET OFF the POTTY!

I am sure Shoemoney will agree. I have had it happen to me as well, a good idea not followed will make you admire be jealous of the person who did it. You will regret you did not do it at the right time. Try it, if it fails, LEARN YOUR LESSON and MOVE ON! Simple as that.

Since in the past year that I have started blogging, it has become some sort of a addiction, a private place in the public domain to shout about anything and everything. Blogging is such a great experience that….eh? My Firefox Spell check says blogging is not even a word!
