For the past month, I finally accepted the fact that I need a laptop. My aversion to laptops started from the day I first saw it, a black and white screen with DOS installed. Since then, I always thought laptops were below desktops in terms of power and ergonomics. But now, I am faced with no other choice but to join the masses owning a laptop and leave the depleting desktop lovers clan :(

Can anyone suggest me a decent laptop with decent performance? My price range is in the neighborhood of 1000$ or 40k INR. I am almost decided on the Dell XPS M1330 for now since its got decent specs and comes in my price bracket too. What do you think?

I am looking for something which will replace my desktop with the following specs.

  • P4, 3Ghz, 1GB RAM
  • 160GB HDD

So which one do you think I shud go for? Help me choose a laptop! ! !

    1GB RAM ?
    You must be kidding…

You need ATLEAST 2GB RAM these days for a NEW laptop.
If you can get 4/8 GB – great.
Even if the processor is 1GB. Otherwise your laptop will be obsolete in 1 week.

    I meant…
Even if the processor is lesser than 3Ghz, get a RAM greater than 1GB.
(I guess the text between the greater than/lesser than signs got lost…. :( )

Dell XPS M1330 is a very good choice, even my brother wanted to buy this but he deferred it for some time.
If you know somebody in Dell, get it from them you are going to save a lot of money which might be used for other upgrades.

As Niyaz has mentioned the RAM might be a little too less, should add some more.
If you want a real cute mobile laptop, I would suggest Dell D430.
And if you want to move away from dell, I would suggest Lenovo :)

I would offer you Apple Mac Book, I think it is one of the most consistent Laptops in the market right now. But don’t ever bother buying Macbook Air, it is one of the worst performing laptops in market right now, it only has good looking.
Also Vista is one of the biggest problems for laptops coming with Microsoft OS, i think apple is the best for now.
