After more than 4 months of owning my HTC S710 phone, I by accident found the settings for GPRS on my HTC phone using Vodafone India services. I had earlier tried to get the settings from Vodafone Care with no luck.
Initially I was insulted by being asked if HTC is a cheap crap chinese phone?!? Then they say that its not possible to get the normal Vodafone Live settings on my HTC as it was running Windows Mobile.

They were more interested in making me subscribe for Mobile Connect, their Rs.199/- or 5$ a month with full access to the internet. I was sure I did not need that as I had wifi connectivity at home, at most of my friends places and heck internet even in a car!!. The only reason I wished that I had vodafone gprs on my mobile was to have a backup in case I took a vacation or if I am stuck travelling or if I get abducted by terrorists. 5$ a month is a bit too much to my already in the roof phone bills (cannot be translated that I have a gf now!)

After a bit of playing around with the settings at the official site, I dicsovered the right mix for GPRS in HTC Mobiles with Vodafone India! Here goes:

First go to Settings -> Connections -> Hutch WAP (GPRS) (or create if you dont have this already)
Connects to: Work
Access point: portalnmms
User name: (empty)
Password: (empty)
Authentication type: Select the option ‘None’
Primary DNS: (empty)
2nd DNS: (empty)
IP Address: 10.10.1.100

Then go to Settings ->Proxy -> Hutch WAP Proxy (Again, create if you don’t have it already)
Connects from: Work
Connects to: WAP Network
Proxy (Name:port):10.10.1.100:9401
Type: Select ‘HTTP’
User Name: (empty)
Password: (empty)

Open Internet Explorer -> Tool -> Options -> Connections
Un-check the Automatically Detect Settings option
Select Network: WAP Network

After this, be sure to reboot your phone and thats it! Voila, Free Vodafone on HTC without having to subscribe to their 199 a month Mobile Connect Plan. I will report again in a few days if its possible to acctually connect my htc phone with a laptop and access the internet. See the Edge(E) symbol on the signal on my screenshot:

@ Sriparna, glad it helped you :) But currently I am in bangalore, using my vodafone on roaming here, but i am not able to get the net here. I think the tinkering with the proxies shud help in getting those settings right as well

@ prashant, I am not able to get the windows mobile update on my htc as well, I think there is something wrong with that. do you get the same error which comes when you switch on the phone?

My phone when switched on says that i cannot use all the services due to some network error and then the network wizard starts.

    Hiii Anand,

You will think that i am asking you queries on the same topic again & again but i am not able to surf the net. With the settings u had given i was able to surf net without any problem but one fine day in the morning when i tried to see my mails it showed the msg “The address is not valid. Check the address & try again.” & since then when i try to open any web-site it flashes the above msg. The GPRS monitor shows the status connected but i am unable to open the site, proceed further. What is the problem?

I have purchased a HTC Google G1 T mobile phone in Singapore and used it successfully with singtel sim and connection as it is a Unlocked Phone.
However, in India with Vodafone I can only get voice calls and cannot connect to the net.
Any solutions, the Vodafone Helpline is at a loss.
Cannot really know why the phone is not working here. No browsing, no maps, no music downloads. Says not connected. I have subscription for both Vodafone connect and GPRS.

    Thanks Anand,
Finally I got rid of paying 199 rent for Vodafone Connect.
For Bangalore you can try the 9201 port instead of 9401. It will work.
I have a problem, I have made the settings in my AT&T Tilt and woks perfectly on internet, web browsing, google map and wheather updates etc but I am not able to download my e-mails (Gmail) which I used to get it from Vodafone Connect. I tried so many settings and trial and errors but all in vain, Suggest me if you have some idea. (I can always goto the web and get it checked, apart from that if you can suggest)

  52. Comment by Anand on February 10, 2009

Are you sure you are getting GPRS for free? I thought it was free too until I got my bill. I am currently paying around 10ps/10 kb here in Kerala. :) Do keep a tab on that.

I am not able to get anything except browsing to work on my phone so far. Maybe its the port number, I will try that out.

I am not able to use gmail, chat on my phone either. I use wifi for that. :(

  60. Comment by Gaurang on March 20, 2009

    Dear Mr. Anand
actually in HTC Touch internet explore setting there is no option “automatically Detect Settings”
I still have same problem with your all setting my phone is connecting to GPRS/EDGE but page is not opening in IE or even in Opera mini.
Request for solution as lots of people have same problem like me.
    Thanks

  61. Comment by Minesh on March 22, 2009

If automatically Detect Settings option is not available then you have created only one connection and you don’t need to uncheck that setting at all. You have to “Enable proxy from the proxy settings, then only it will work. How ever Gmail and some app. like Quick GPS may not update as these app.s don’t work via proxy.

  65. Comment by Anand on April 8, 2009

Hi mate, I would suggest going to the local mobile shop for more information on the grps rates in your city/town because the rates are different in most places. I would suggest trying out airtel as many of the GPRS users I know are Airtel users. As for settings, the call centre will be able to help with the same, if not ping me!

  66. Hi anand, thanks for the help. It worked on my htc touch p3452. However i’d like to add that, in windows mobile 6.1, you have to create a proxy connection by going to Connections-> My Work->add new proxy server, where in you set that it connects to the internet. usually people (like me as well) go to the tab above work, named “MY ISP” (for my mobile) and we adda new modem connection there, the same proxy address also we provide in the advanced settings page which is wrong. The right way is what you said. Create a proxy inside the work connection, which connects to internet, and under the same work connection add a new connection, not in my ISP. Then it works!

  67. Comment by raj on April 13, 2009

    Hi Anand,

I have HTC Touch Viva -using Vodafone connection. i tried with the connection setting as you specified in the blog. but i am not able to, i am seeing diffecrent settings in htc VIVA can u pl suggest me to connect…..web

    thanks in advance

  68. You may try the “Connection Setup” tool in your HTC viva. Once you set it to configure to Vodafone IN, then go to the connections from Settings->Connections. There Vodafone Mobile connect will be created, you need to edit that setting. Instead of www change it to portanlnmms. Then go to the proxy server settings in the ISP place (not in work) and there you will find a SOCKS proxy is set, edit that and clear the entry to reset the SOCKS entry, then go to http proxy and add the following IP address “10.10.1.100″ and in port add Port No 9401. Then it must work seamlessly.

  95. Comment by Dr Venugopal on June 30, 2009

    Banny,

I am thankful to Anand for the settings he gave. I tweaked it a bit but managed to connect to vodafone internet with my ASUS p320 and using it regularly without added monthly expenses. I hope I can help you step by step

    1. Click start - go to settings- go to connections- click connections icon

    2. If you already have configured it then click Manage existing connections- select existing connection and then click edit or click new for a fresh connection

    3. Enter name as Vodafone GPRS and select modem as Cellular line (GPRS) and click next

    4. Enter Access point name as portalnmms and click next.

    5. Leave user name, password and domain empty and click finish.

    6. Click Proxy settings in the bottom toolbar and tick This network connects to the internet and also tick This network uses a proxy server to conn…..

    7. Click Advanced tab
For HTTP, enter server no as 10.10.1.100:9401

    8. Click OK thrice and u are finished.
Reset the phone and click internet explorer to surf at will.

Let me know if it works or not.

    Dr Venugopal

    Hi,

I am from Bangalore and was using internet perfectly with my old Sony Ericsson phone. But recently I have purchased HTC Touch Diamond 2. The internet is not working with the above GPRS settings.

I have done all the above settings, But not the below one…

Open Internet Explorer -> Tool -> Options -> Connections
Un-check the Automatically Detect Settings option
    Select Network: WAP Network

I cannot find the Connections under Options in Internet Explorer. Please help me to resolve the issue.

    with regards,
    Navaneeth

@ Dr Venugopal on your comment on June 30, 2009

I correctly followed all the steps provided by you.

I restart my phone but while accessing net i get a error message “cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection setting and change them if needed, tab Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer’s documnetation and try again”

I am already using internet in my windows mobile @ mumbai vodaphone. But while making your changes into the handset the internet is not accessible.

    @ Ananad
Dude this is called a SET BY STEP of the setting provided by Dr Venugopal.

You still making money out of it…. no use dude…. the settings are not working in any region of india.

    Nikhilesh,

It’s unfair to pick on Anand as many of us have got internet on our devices becoz of his first post. Of course he is not a mobile professional and did his job of informally helping us out.

I am an orthopaedic surgeon used to engineering in bones but this is my leisure
    time activity.

I gave the settings for Banny who has the same device as I have and it worked for him. The setting are specific for my ASUS P320 Windows 6.1 version for Mumbai Vodafone. I also have an O2 xda IIi running the ancient windows 2003 but working with internet on airtel using slightly different settings

Let us sort out ur problem
    1. Let me know ur device and windows version and I will try to go into more detailed steps with you

    2. If in Bangalore the port no changes to 9201 instead of 9401 in the Http row so you type 10.10.1.100:9201
(Minesh said it worked for him in his earlier post of Feb 09)
I dont know about other cities.

    Dear Anand,
I have a same problem as NAvneeth, I am also at bangalore, and having HTC TOuchDiamond, I tried Vodaphone, Reliance GSM and BSNL but unable to get onto net.
I tried everything what you and Dr Venugopal have suggested, but to no avail.

In fact I bought Touch diamond with sole purpose of net on the move, since I am unable to use for its intended use I am helpless.

    Pls guide me

    Thanks a ton in anticipation
