HTC Mobile GPRS Settings for Vodafone India

After more than 4 months of owning my HTC S710 phone, I by accident found the settings for GPRS on my HTC phone using Vodafone India services. I had earlier tried to get the settings from Vodafone Care with no luck.
Initially I was insulted by being asked if HTC is a cheap crap chinese phone?!? Then they say that its not possible to get the normal Vodafone Live settings on my HTC as it was running Windows Mobile.

They were more interested in making me subscribe for Mobile Connect, their Rs.199/- or 5$ a month with full access to the internet. I was sure I did not need that as I had wifi connectivity at home, at most of my friends places and heck internet even in a car!!. The only reason I wished that I had vodafone gprs on my mobile was to have a backup in case I took a vacation or if I am stuck travelling or if I get abducted by terrorists. 5$ a month is a bit too much to my already in the roof phone bills (cannot be translated that I have a gf now!)

After a bit of playing around with the settings at the official site, I dicsovered the right mix for GPRS in HTC Mobiles with Vodafone India! Here goes:

First go to Settings -> Connections -> Hutch WAP (GPRS) (or create if you dont have this already)
Connects to: Work
Access point: portalnmms
User name: (empty)
Password: (empty)
Authentication type: Select the option ‘None’
Primary DNS: (empty)
2nd DNS: (empty)
IP Address: 10.10.1.100

Then go to Settings ->Proxy -> Hutch WAP Proxy (Again, create if you don’t have it already)
Connects from: Work
Connects to: WAP Network
Proxy (Name:port):10.10.1.100:9401
Type: Select ‘HTTP’
User Name: (empty)
Password: (empty)

Open Internet Explorer -> Tool -> Options -> Connections
Un-check the Automatically Detect Settings option
Select Network: WAP Network

After this, be sure to reboot your phone and thats it! Voila, Free Vodafone on HTC without having to subscribe to their 199 a month Mobile Connect Plan. I will report again in a few days if its possible to acctually connect my htc phone with a laptop and access the internet. See the Edge(E) symbol on the signal on my screenshot:

  3. Comment by Anand on August 23, 2008

@ Sriparna, glad it helped you :) But currently I am in bangalore, using my vodafone on roaming here, but i am not able to get the net here. I think the tinkering with the proxies shud help in getting those settings right as well

@ prashant, I am not able to get the windows mobile update on my htc as well, I think there is something wrong with that. do you get the same error which comes when you switch on the phone?

My phone when switched on says that i cannot use all the services due to some network error and then the network wizard starts.

    Hiii Anand,

You will think that i am asking you queries on the same topic again & again but i am not able to surf the net. With the settings u had given i was able to surf net without any problem but one fine day in the morning when i tried to see my mails it showed the msg “The address is not valid. Check the address & try again.” & since then when i try to open any web-site it flashes the above msg. The GPRS monitor shows the status connected but i am unable to open the site, proceed further. What is the problem?

    Amod

  26. Comment by Anand on December 1, 2008

I recently bought an HTC S710 and was really bugged by the fact that Vodafone Live did not work on it. I called up Vodaone but the dummies seemed to have no idea! Even the HTC technical care told me that Vodafone Live won’t work on HTC since its a windows mobile! And here i am no, using it on the same phone!
I am soo soo grateful to u for these settings!!

hey guys, I am not sure if these settings will work on your make since I found this out in trial and error. Also, it seems that I have been charged for the usage of vodafone gprs, making it paid, not free :(

Also, make sure you use the internet explorer setting of use preferred connection as I found many had not set tht up properly.

Hi, I have a HTC P3400i , do i use the same procedure in getting the GPRS settings?

  40. Comment by aniruddha banerjee on January 3, 2009

I have purchased a HTC Google G1 T mobile phone in Singapore and used it successfully with singtel sim and connection as it is a Unlocked Phone.
However, in India with Vodafone I can only get voice calls and cannot connect to the net.
Any solutions, the Vodafone Helpline is at a loss.
Cannot really know why the phone is not working here. No browsing, no maps, no music downloads. Says not connected. I have subscription for both Vodafone connect and GPRS.

  51. Comment by Minesh on February 9, 2009

    Thanks Anand,
Finally I got rid of paying 199 rent for Vodafone Connect.
For Bangalore you can try the 9201 port instead of 9401. It will work.
I have a problem, I have made the settings in my AT&T Tilt and woks perfectly on internet, web browsing, google map and wheather updates etc but I am not able to download my e-mails (Gmail) which I used to get it from Vodafone Connect. I tried so many settings and trial and errors but all in vain, Suggest me if you have some idea. (I can always goto the web and get it checked, apart from that if you can suggest)

  52. Comment by Anand on February 10, 2009

Are you sure you are getting GPRS for free? I thought it was free too until I got my bill. I am currently paying around 10ps/10 kb here in Kerala. :) Do keep a tab on that.

I am not able to get anything except browsing to work on my phone so far. Maybe its the port number, I will try that out.

I am not able to use gmail, chat on my phone either. I use wifi for that. :(

  59. Comment by Naresh on March 19, 2009

“The remote party has ended this connection.”

I am using S710 and I am in bangalore.

Please respond to me on… naresh640@yahoo.com

  60. Comment by Gaurang on March 20, 2009

    Dear Mr. Anand
actually in HTC Touch internet explore setting there is no option “automatically Detect Settings”
I still have same problem with your all setting my phone is connecting to GPRS/EDGE but page is not opening in IE or even in Opera mini.
Request for solution as lots of people have same problem like me.
    Thanks

  61. Comment by Minesh on March 22, 2009

If automatically Detect Settings option is not available then you have created only one connection and you don’t need to uncheck that setting at all. You have to “Enable proxy from the proxy settings, then only it will work. How ever Gmail and some app. like Quick GPS may not update as these app.s don’t work via proxy.

  62. Comment by Venugopal on March 22, 2009

Oh, I had given up after similarly going to a vodafone store as they want u to pay 199/- per month…..way too much!! It was so easy after I read ur post. Many many Thanx yaar. ur the no. 1 post to be seen for all windows mobile phone users who are floundering without internet…..

I got new HTC touch dual but unfortunately it does not support Wifi connection, still I want to use internet on my phone can you help me which will be the best service provider Airtel or vodafone (prepaid/postpaid) and the exact way of settings. please respond to me on amunaff@aol.com, appreciate your help

  65. Comment by Anand on April 8, 2009

Hi mate, I would suggest going to the local mobile shop for more information on the grps rates in your city/town because the rates are different in most places. I would suggest trying out airtel as many of the GPRS users I know are Airtel users. As for settings, the call centre will be able to help with the same, if not ping me!

  66. Hi anand, thanks for the help. It worked on my htc touch p3452. However i’d like to add that, in windows mobile 6.1, you have to create a proxy connection by going to Connections-> My Work->add new proxy server, where in you set that it connects to the internet. usually people (like me as well) go to the tab above work, named “MY ISP” (for my mobile) and we adda new modem connection there, the same proxy address also we provide in the advanced settings page which is wrong. The right way is what you said. Create a proxy inside the work connection, which connects to internet, and under the same work connection add a new connection, not in my ISP. Then it works!

  67. Comment by raj on April 13, 2009

    Hi Anand,

I have HTC Touch Viva -using Vodafone connection. i tried with the connection setting as you specified in the blog. but i am not able to, i am seeing diffecrent settings in htc VIVA can u pl suggest me to connect…..web

    thanks in advance

  68. You may try the “Connection Setup” tool in your HTC viva. Once you set it to configure to Vodafone IN, then go to the connections from Settings->Connections. There Vodafone Mobile connect will be created, you need to edit that setting. Instead of www change it to portanlnmms. Then go to the proxy server settings in the ISP place (not in work) and there you will find a SOCKS proxy is set, edit that and clear the entry to reset the SOCKS entry, then go to http proxy and add the following IP address “10.10.1.100″ and in port add Port No 9401. Then it must work seamlessly.

  95. Comment by Dr Venugopal on June 30, 2009

    Banny,

I am thankful to Anand for the settings he gave. I tweaked it a bit but managed to connect to vodafone internet with my ASUS p320 and using it regularly without added monthly expenses. I hope I can help you step by step

    1. Click start – go to settings- go to connections- click connections icon

    2. If you already have configured it then click Manage existing connections- select existing connection and then click edit or click new for a fresh connection

    3. Enter name as Vodafone GPRS and select modem as Cellular line (GPRS) and click next

    4. Enter Access point name as portalnmms and click next.

    5. Leave user name, password and domain empty and click finish.

    6. Click Proxy settings in the bottom toolbar and tick This network connects to the internet and also tick This network uses a proxy server to conn…..

    7. Click Advanced tab
For HTTP, enter server no as 10.10.1.100:9401

    8. Click OK thrice and u are finished.
Reset the phone and click internet explorer to surf at will.

Let me know if it works or not.

    Dr Venugopal

    Hi,

I am from Bangalore and was using internet perfectly with my old Sony Ericsson phone. But recently I have purchased HTC Touch Diamond 2. The internet is not working with the above GPRS settings.

I have done all the above settings, But not the below one…

Open Internet Explorer -> Tool -> Options -> Connections
Un-check the Automatically Detect Settings option
    Select Network: WAP Network

I cannot find the Connections under Options in Internet Explorer. Please help me to resolve the issue.

    with regards,
    Navaneeth

@ Dr Venugopal on your comment on June 30, 2009

I correctly followed all the steps provided by you.

I restart my phone but while accessing net i get a error message “cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection setting and change them if needed, tab Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer’s documnetation and try again”

I am already using internet in my windows mobile @ mumbai vodaphone. But while making your changes into the handset the internet is not accessible.

    @ Ananad
Dude this is called a SET BY STEP of the setting provided by Dr Venugopal.

You still making money out of it…. no use dude…. the settings are not working in any region of india.

  103. Comment by Dr Venugopal on July 3, 2009

    Nikhilesh,

It’s unfair to pick on Anand as many of us have got internet on our devices becoz of his first post. Of course he is not a mobile professional and did his job of informally helping us out.

I am an orthopaedic surgeon used to engineering in bones but this is my leisure
    time activity.

I gave the settings for Banny who has the same device as I have and it worked for him. The setting are specific for my ASUS P320 Windows 6.1 version for Mumbai Vodafone. I also have an O2 xda IIi running the ancient windows 2003 but working with internet on airtel using slightly different settings

Let us sort out ur problem
    1. Let me know ur device and windows version and I will try to go into more detailed steps with you

    2. If in Bangalore the port no changes to 9201 instead of 9401 in the Http row so you type 10.10.1.100:9201
(Minesh said it worked for him in his earlier post of Feb 09)
I dont know about other cities.

  104. Comment by Girish on July 3, 2009

    Dear Anand,
I have a same problem as NAvneeth, I am also at bangalore, and having HTC TOuchDiamond, I tried Vodaphone, Reliance GSM and BSNL but unable to get onto net.
I tried everything what you and Dr Venugopal have suggested, but to no avail.

In fact I bought Touch diamond with sole purpose of net on the move, since I am unable to use for its intended use I am helpless.

    Pls guide me

    Thanks a ton in anticipation

  105. Comment by Nikhilesh on July 5, 2009

    @ Dr Venugopal

I am using windows mobile for more than 5 yrs, with a internet connection.

I am not here to abuse anyone, i did talked to Anand via chat day before yesterday and told wat my problem was.

I myself is a Software Engineer/ Web developer in a Top reputed company in Mumbai.

If you can help me ……..I want to use free internet in Vodaphone mumbai region.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SETTING FOR THIS?

  106. Comment by Dr Venugopal on July 6, 2009

    Nikhilesh,

Nice to see that things are sorted out.

Internet will not be totally free but will be under your control (without the added monthly fixed charge of Rs. 199/- even if you dont use internet for a month)
Charge is as per 10 paise/10 kb.

Let us try this approach to your problem.
Delete all previous connections in ‘Manage existing connections’ in both My ISP and My Work categories in the Connections page
Start fresh with my previous settings by using ‘Add a new modem connection’ in My ISP . Do not add any connections in the My Work internet category after deleting existing connection. Remember to set up Proxy server in My ISP as detailed.

Mind you, I am saying it as it is, in my ASUS P320 which runs windows 6.1.

If it still does not work then we will ask somebody who owns a Touch Diamond here who is using internet to give you the settings from their phone.

There is no reason for it not to work as windows mobile is standard in all these phones and not much different. Even today to check I deleted all the settings in my phone, reset it and again re-entered the above settings and it worked.

    So, all the best.

    Hi

I have a HTC Touch gsm phone with windows 6.0 version and i recently purchased a vodafone prepaid connection in bangalore.

I tried setting up GPRS based on inputs above but i get the following error

“There is a problem connecting to the GPRS service in the roaming network you are in”

i dont understand why it says roaming network since i reside in bangalore and i purchased this connection from a vodafone store in bangalore.

    Can anyone help please?

The settings i have completed are

    1. Go to settings -> connections -> connections -> Advanced tab –> Select Networks –> In the first drop down, i have chosen Hutch WAP Settings, other option are Hutch Internet settings, my iSP and my work network…..

    2. Go to settings -> connections -> connections -> In the first set named “Hutch WAP settings”, add a new modem connection i have followed the instructions above to provide access point name and in proxy server, i have followed instructions to provide IP address with ports.

I am using HTC S710 Window Mobile 6.0
i have downloaded Opera Mini and installed in Java section

when i using Wap/GPRS and opening opera mini its first asking

“Untrusted MIDIet Opera Mini wants to send or receive information from //server4.operamini.com:1080. This will require the use of airtime which may cost you money. Do you want to allow this (Net access)”

    and i selected Yes

    after that its asing permissions
    1. Yes, but ask me next session
    2. Yes, but ask me next time.

and i selected 1 then i got the Error
“Failed to connect to the Internet. Go to http://operamini.com/help?version=4.2 with your desktop browser or contact your service provider for thr Internet settings.”

the interesting thing is i can browse pages from “Opera Mobile” its not installed in Java part its installed in Windows Mobile part

and if i connect using WLAN its connecting from “Opera Mini”

so my conclusion is Opera Mini will not work with Wap/GPRS
but it will work with WLAN

please help me to sort this out

    Regards

  203. Comment by Dr Venugopal on January 9, 2010

    @ Jayashankar and everybody else.

I was getting Orange when network name is Vodafone on my asus p320 windows 6.1 phone.

I found a simple freeware software called OpMon v0.3 which is available as a free download in the Communications software section at freewareppc.com. I downloaded it and renamed the network myself as Vodafone and now it shows Vodafone. Anyone facing a problem with new networks not showing on their slightly older phones can use this and change the name themselves.

Also plenty of other extremely useful free software for actually using your GPS receiver are available there. I personally have downloaded plenty of free full sofware and games and am also using my device GPS capability fully. You dont need to register or login and there are no viruses or hanging troubles after download.

    regards

Hope this is of help to all windows mobile users

Did this thing work with android as well…I would be grateful if you would answer my query.

  206. Comment by Arun on January 25, 2010

    hEY guys,
a very important observations for windows mobile 6.0, 6.1,6.5 and 7 users is that you need to store your vodafone live settings in “MY MMS NETWORKS” for it to work. It will not work anywhere else (It will not run if the settings are saved in my internet, my wap network, my streaming networks, my ISp, proxy internet, my work network). THEREFORE MAKE SURE U SAVE THE SETTINGS IN MY MMS NETWORKS, then go to connections, ADVANCED then click on select networks and choose both options to MY MMS networks. This should work. The settings mentioned in the posts above are perfectly fine. IN karnataka use the port 9401 in both http and wap ports.

This is specifically for windows mobile phones

  208. Comment by Arun on January 28, 2010

hi raja, you dont need to choose any authentication. authentication is not required. m unsure about the port for kerala. Vodafone u cud try 9201 9401 or 8080. any of this shud work i assume.

the procedures are the same as above. please follow the same mentioned by Mr.venugopal or jayaram and then the rest as i have mentioned above. this shud work or u cud try going to your vodafone store. :)

    Hi Anand,
I was facing the same problem as you. I had GPRS on my HTC Touch Viva active but couldnt use the messenger or Send/Recieve Emails. It would give the error “There is a problem with your GPRS connection. Please try again later”. Though i could surf the web and even view videos on the youtube application i have!
I then activated the Vodafone Mobile Connect data plan(@Rs 199per month). That is what will get your Windows Live Messenger & emails to work.
    Hope that helped.

    Hey Anand,

Thanks a ton for these settings. It works awesome with my Samsung & imate Smartphone. You know, these Vodafone guys outrightly claim that GPRS won’t work in Windows mobile unless you subscribe to Vodafone Mobile Connect plan, which starts at Rs.199 per month. In fact I cursed myself for owning a Windows Mobile + Vodafone connection. I even had this Mobile Connect plan active for 2 months. Now that I was looking if vodafone has come up with some cheaper plan & landed to your blog. Thanks again bro.

    Google is panacea!

I am using HTC Hero. Unfortunately, Vodafone Live was not working to check mails on GMAIL so I went ahead and activated Vodafone Mobile Connect. None of the customer care executives at Vodafone know how to setup the settings for the phone. This is ridiculous.

Can anyone here help me with the Vodafone mobile connect setting on HTC Hero!

  250. Comment by Srikanth on June 4, 2010

I am using HTC Hero and following are the setting for Vodafone Live and Vodafone Mobile Connect,

    Vodafone Live:

    Name: Vodafone live
    APN: portalnmms
    Proxy: 10.10.1.100
    Port: 9401
    APN type; default

    Vodafone Mobile connect:

    Name: Vodafone Mobile connect
    APN: www
    MCC:404
    MNC:13
    APN type: default

*** MCC & MNC are the default setting when I created new APN. I left them as they are….

Once you finish setting up. Switch off the mobile and switch it back on.

Tip: With Vodafone live one will not be able to access Gmail through browser as well as gmail apps. One would need Vodafone mobile connect for access to Gmail apps and gmail through mobile browser.

    hi
i have HTC Touch Pro 2 (T mobile unlocked) windows 6.5 and i use bsnl prepaid.
I have been using it for about a month and i still have not been able to find the right gprs settings, the google map app works perfectly(and the gps too).

i have 3 settings : bsnlwap, bsnllive, bsnlnet i did nothing other then putting the APN name same as the setting name(i.e bsnlwap for bsnlwap) for all the three settings. The net works very slow and only worked on bsnlnet,, but for last couple of days net is not working for any setting.(google maps n gps still working very slow)

my friend received a message that bsnlwap n bsnlnet have been terminated and bsnllive has to be used…somthing like that, thats why i created bsnllive but nothing gud at all.
Please send gprs settings for my HTC Touch Pro 2 T-mobile unlocked(bsnl prepaid UP,moradabad)

    Hi everybody,

It has been a pleasure reading all this and has been a very interesting experience. I have gone through all the above but I cannot see my problem solved. Could you please help

I am using a Palm Treo 750 Device with Windows 6 and Vodafone Mobile Connect. I can access and download mails, I can go to Google maps (downloaded) and can access all of it. But I cannot use a web browser.

It connects (through the Vodafone Mobile Connect auto settings), starts locating BUT BUT does not connect. Then it says ” the page cannot be displayed because the connection was lost.

I have tried this several times and in several days but the message is the same. Vodafone cannot help as they know nothing about this phone.

Earlier I was using GPRS and the Web worked, but then emails did not download attachments. So Vodafone told me that their hardware does not support attachments in GPRS mode so you need to upgrade to Mobile connect. Since I needed it I took BUT now I have different problems.

Now after reading all above, I tried the settings as above, but now it does not connect to net at all. It tries to connect and then says settings are not correct.

    Please advice. Thanks

    Hi People,
Is this service still available ? Well, I have HTC touch pro (aka HTC Fuze), running as 6.1 windows mobile. I have a prepaid connection of Vodafone in delhi. Well, I did all the things suggested here on my device, did set up exactly same as what Krishna Pandey suggested, but I couldnt start my GPRS :(. As soon as I turn on my data connection it says, “The answering modem has disconnected. Check your connection setting and blah blah”..
Also should I check the GPRS authentication as PAP or CHAP ? Well, infact I tried both, nothing worked in my case.
Guys, please help me, i desperately want to use GPRS on my device.

let me make it simple …….
    1.) add a new modem connection> cellular line(gprs,3g)> apn(portalnmms) > finish.
2.) set up my proxy server >
    a) general – name it
    b) proxy settings – check on THIS NETWORK CONNECT TO INTERNET. AND THIS N/W USES PROXY SERVER also.
click advanced…> select HTTP > type 10.10.1.100 in 1st block and 9401 in 2nd block.
now come out of everything by clicking OK button on top right. then restart ur mobile.
aftr restsrting, go to SET UP MY PROXY SERVER > MODEM. TAP AND HOLD SETTING U CREATED ABOVE IN 2(a). AND CLICK CONNECT.
    THAT WILL DEFINITELY GONNA WORK….
