Update WordPress leaving your hair intact

Update WordPress leaving your hair intact. Seriously!

I have WordPress on majority of my sites and I have a bad headache each time I do a upgrade. I find it tiresome hair-pulling to have all the file backups and database backups and deactivate the plugins, upload new files and all that. Takes me about 30 minutes for each site. Imagine the headache for 15 sites! Then on, I started out sourcing my headaches upgrades on Digitalpoint. Worth the money spent for sure!

Last week I came across a plugin I always wished for; one which upgrades the wordpress site sans all trouble!

WordPress Automatic Upgrade allows a user to automatically upgrade the wordpress installation to the latest one provided by wordpress.org using the 5 steps provided in the wordpress upgrade instructions.

Like every cautious webmaster. I took it for a ride on one of my smaller sites and it worked so perfect and I was done in less than 5 minutes. Impressed, I ran it across all my sites and all 14 sites upgraded without a problem except for one which gave me some error with pluggable.php on line 47 or so. Upon inspection, I found that the problem was with the blank line in the wp-config.php, nothing to do with the plugin in question.

Then I put it into the biggest blog in my network, this one. It ran pretty nice till the database backup part where my host suspended my account for increased CPU usage.

Anand’s Hostmonster Account suspended!

Scared the Micky out of me for a moment, making me realize that hosting is the most important element in a Webmasters life. Take my advice, choose your host wisely. Forget money in this, go for quality. Before I could decide what to do, my host, HostMonster restored my account and I was all happy again.

Then on the upgrade went smooth and I was thanking the creators of this great plugin all the way. Hats off to you guys! You made my life so easy. One small thing I noticed was that it did not activate the Adsense Deluxe plugin automatically on any of my sites, I had to activate it manually. Overall, this is one plugin you need on your wordpress, thumbs whole hand down! 😀
